ERATTUPETTA - 24 km. One of the easternmost trading centres of Kottayam district. Confluence of two rivers, Teekoy Puzha and Poonjar Puzha that form River Meenachil. Rose as habitat of Muslim Khans who migrated as aides of Poonjar Raja from Chithayankotta near Madurai. Erattupetta Panchayat is 90% Muslim and the rest Christian and yet they live in perfect harmony. The Nainar mosque (whose current president is Muhammed Zakir [Pic] who has claims to be of Khan descent) in the heart of the town is said to be over 800 years old. So also St George Church across the river at Aruvithura and the Ammalamman Kovil very near to it. |
