MUNNAR - 215 km via Elappara and Kattapana. Famous for the Kannan Devan Tea produced originally by the Kannan Devan Tea Plantation, established as per an agreement signed in 1877 between the English planter John Daniel Munro and Kerlavarma Valiyaraja of Poonjar Royal family. Over the years, companies like James Finlay, Tata-Finlay and Tata Tea owned the plantation comprising large number of estates and factories. Eravikulam National Park, known for the mountain goats named Nilgiri Tahr, Pampadumshola National Park, Anamalai National Park, Kurinji Sanctuary, Indo-Swiss Cattle Farm, Madupetty and Kundala Dams, Marayoor with its sandal wood forests, Kanthalloor, known for its orange gardens are around Munnar. Top Station, 40 km away has the remnants of the rope way that used to transport tea from Munnar to be exported to England. Once known for horse race, the Munnar grounds has now been turned into a national High Altitude Sports School. |
